Discover the creative world of Vanessa Sicotte
When she contacted us for a custom mural, we were delighted to collaborate with Vanessa Sicotte, a true institution in Quebec's interior design world. Unable to find what she was looking for on the market, Vanessa turned to our custom service to create the unique pattern she had in mind.
Who is Vanessa Sicotte?
Vanessa Sicotte is passionate about all aspects of interior design. For 12 years now, she has been sharing her finds, favorite DIYs, and inspirations through her blog Damask et Dentelle, her TV appearances as a host and columnist, her 2 books, her social media, her loft which can be rented as a creative space, and her podcast.
Her creative process
When decorating a space, Vanessa explains that she draws inspiration first and foremost from the building housing that space. It's important for her to respect the soul of a room. For example, when she moved into her new workspace, she drew inspiration from the building's century-old industrial look to do justice to this place already brimming with personality. Then, all she had to do was add her favorite vintage furniture, plants, and decorative elements in blue (her favorite color!) to create a space that makes us feel like we're by the sea.

For the wallpaper mural planned for her loft kitchen, Vanessa wanted to combine two completely distinct elements that, together, create a very interesting result. First, she drew inspiration from a dyeing technique used in Mali, Bògòlanfini (mud cloth). This technique involves protecting certain parts of a fabric with dried mud and then dyeing it. The sections protected by the mud thus create negative white spaces that give the fabric a unique character. Then, to create the pattern, Vanessa wanted to include shapes inspired by the inkblots of the famous psychologist Hermann Rorschach, who used these abstract shapes to assess an individual's psychological characteristics. Finally, it was important for Vanessa to create a repetitive pattern, which she believes adds a calming effect to a room's ambiance.

The final result is fascinating. The pattern is busy and colorful, yet at the same time soothing and understated. Our minds get lost in the different blotches, which makes the room unique and warm.

Vanessa loves to draw inspiration from everything around her. Her favorite platform: Instagram. She enjoys following designers and decoration enthusiasts like herself, all over the world. Internationally, her favorite accounts are Maison Sarah Lavoine, Jenni Kayne, Kelly Wearstler, Justina Blakeney, Leanne Ford, Amber Lewis and Diane Keaton. And when asked about her local inspirations? She mentions Hey maca, Mister Minimalist, Baba souk and Déconome.Finally, when it's time to shop, Vanessa likes to support the following boutiques:
