Discover the Creative World of Vanessa Sicotte
When she reached out to us about creating a custom wall mural, we were thrilled to collaborate with Vanessa Sicotte, a true institution in the Quebec design world. Unable to find what she was looking for on the market, Vanessa turned to our custom service to create the one-of-a-kind pattern she had in mind.
Who Is Vanessa Sicotte?
Vanessa Sicotte is passionate about decor in every sense of the word. For the past 12 years, she's been sharing her favourite finds, DIY projects, and inspiration through her Damask et Dentelle blog, her TV appearances as a host and columnist, her 2 books, her social media, her loft, which can be rented as a creative space, and her podcast.
Her Creative Process
When decorating a space, Vanessa explains that she draws inspiration first and foremost from the building that houses it. Staying true to the soul of a room matters to her. For example, when she moved into her new workspace, she drew on the building's century-old industrial character to do justice to a space already brimming with personality. From there, it's simply a matter of adding her favourite vintage furniture, plants, and decor accents in blue (her favourite colour!) to create a space that feels like it's right on the seaside.
The Herman Mural
For the wallpaper mural planned for her loft kitchen, Vanessa wanted to combine two completely distinct elements that would come together into something really compelling. First, she drew inspiration from a dyeing technique used in Mali called Bogolanfini (mud cloth in English). This technique involves protecting certain parts of a fabric with dried mud before dyeing it. The mud-protected sections create white negative spaces that give the fabric its distinctive character. Next, to build the pattern, Vanessa wanted to include shapes inspired by the inkblots of the famous psychologist Hermann Rorschach, who used these abstract forms to assess a person's psychological traits. Finally, it was important to Vanessa that the pattern be repetitive, which she feels adds a calming effect to a room's atmosphere.

The final result is fascinating. The pattern is busy and colourful, yet restful and understated at the same time. The eye gets lost wandering through the different shapes, which makes the room feel both unique and warm.
