How to Choose the Right Size for Your Mural: Complete Guide

You've found the perfect mural—but what size should you order? This is one of the most frequent questions we receive at Décor Imprimé. Too small, it gets lost on the wall. Too large, it overwhelms the room. Here's how to choose the precise size for your mural.

Step 1: Measure your wall precisely

Start by measuring the width and height of the area you want to cover, in centimeters. Measure at three different spots (bottom, middle, top for width; left, center, right for height) because walls are not always perfectly straight. Note the largest measurement for each dimension.

If you want to cover the entire wall, add 5 cm on each side for trimming. If you prefer a smaller mural that creates a framed art effect, define the precise area before measuring.

Step 2: Account for obstacles

Electrical outlets, switches, windows, doors—these elements influence your mural's placement. If your wall has a window, decide whether you want to cover only the solid part, or if you want the pattern to continue around it. In this case, specify the cutouts in your order.

Step 3: Choose the ratio based on the desired effect

There are two main approaches:

  • Full-wall mural: covers the entire surface, from floor to ceiling. Immersive and spectacular effect. Ideal for large-format landscape, forest, or abstract murals.
  • Partial mural: occupies 2/3 to 3/4 of the wall height. More contemporary, it leaves a band of solid color above or below. Very trendy for bedrooms and living rooms.

Step 4: Evaluate proportions based on the room

The ideal size of your mural also depends on the room's dimensions:

  • Small room (<10 m²): opt for small-scale patterns or vertical murals that add height. Avoid very large repetitive patterns that visually overload the space.
  • Medium room (10–20 m²): you can go for a medium to large pattern. A full-wall mural creates a powerful visual anchor.
  • Large room (>20 m²): generous formats are a must. Panoramic murals, forests, and large-format urban landscapes truly shine in these spaces.

Step 5: Anticipate pattern repeat

For repetitive patterns (geometric, floral, tile), check the repeat of the chosen pattern. The larger the repeat, the more material will be needed for matching—which can increase the required quantity. Our wallpaper murals are supplied in adjusted widths to minimize cutting waste.

Reference table: mural sizes by room

As a guide, here are the most commonly ordered dimensions by room:

  • Adult bedroom (wall behind the headboard): 180–220 cm wide × 200–240 cm high
