How to install self-adhesive wallpaper: a step-by-step guide

Materials needed

• A clean cloth or a smoothing squeegee (or a simple plastic spatula)
• A tape measure and a pencil
• A level (or a level app on your phone)
• A sharp utility knife (Exacto)

Step 1 — Prepare the wall

90% of the adhesion depends on preparation. Clean the wall with lightly soapy water to remove dust and grease, then let it dry thoroughly. Peel and stick wallpaper adheres best to a smooth, clean, and dry surface, painted at least 3-4 weeks prior. Avoid very matte or textured paints, which reduce adhesion.

Step 2 — Measure and mark a guideline

Measure the height of the wall and add a few centimeters of margin. Using the level, draw a light vertical line with a pencil as a guide for your first panel: this ensures that everything else will be straight.

Step 3 — Install the first panel

Peel off the first 20-30 cm of the backing, align the top with your mark, then press. Gradually work your way down, peeling off the backing as you go—never all at once. Smooth from the center outwards with your squeegee to remove air bubbles.

Step 4 — Remove bubbles
